Large-scale food pantry in WNC

Haywood Christian Ministry (HCM), located in Haywood County, NC, is a non-profit organization serving the community since 1970. HCM operates a thrift store and a large-scale food pantry, which feeds thousands of people every year. Within the year 2023, HCM's food pantry provided food to over 5,000 individuals and averaged 1.2 million pounds of food, which (according to Feeding America estimates) is equivalent to 1 million meals. Food pantries of this scale are a vital resource for those who are battling hunger in the community. Distributing food to anyone, regardless of religious beliefs, race, or ethnicity. HCM works as a partner with the local farming community and receives grants from the state and city but most importantly, the kindness of individual donors. The most recent grant from Impact Health allowed HCM to purchase a fully electric truck that helps deliver food to rural areas or those without easily accessible transportation. Operating at a large scale, assistance goes to those battling hunger, ensuring no one sleeps hungry.

HCM’s mission is to provide nourishing food to those who are struggling to make ends meet, and their team of hardworking volunteers and dedicated staff are doing an excellent job of it. The food pantry is run by a team of volunteers who work tirelessly to sort, organize, and distribute the foods they receive. HCM distributes food donations from local businesses, grocery stores, and individuals through its pantry and mobile food programs. Emphasizing the dedication of those who work at the pantry, and the amazing generosity of the community. A family of 4 can receive a grocery supplement every week with fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meats (if available). Ensuring no child or parent goes hungry, and enables a better environment for people to function without worrying about where their next meal is coming from, improving a large group of people’s quality of life. The food pantry is open and operating 3 days a week every week Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and is open from 9 am to 4 pm with an hour break between 12-1.

HCM's food pantry has become critical to the community due to the harsh economic struggles prevalent in Haywood County and the surrounding areas. Many families in the area have been hit hard by the economic downturn, and the demand for food assistance has skyrocketed. HCM continues to take measures to be able to assist the increase of those in need, working tirelessly to ensure that everyone has access to healthy and nutritious food. HCM has adapted to the changes in the economy and those in need and has modified its operations to ensure the best efficiency for its volunteers and clients. Implementing new protocols, such as contactless delivery, and drive-thru distribution. Which is beneficial for those who are elderly, disabled, or unable to travel from rural areas.

HCM respects the privacy of their patients and assists anyone from any community whether or not they live in Haywood County. Offering anyone in need a safe place to get nutritious foods. Their commitment to providing a safe place for individuals to access nutritious foods is a testament to their dedication to promoting the overall health and well-being of their clients. The food pantry has been featured on the local news and has been recognized by large-scale food banks like Manna, raising further awareness about the mission and the large scale of assistance the pantry provides.

If you are able, please consider donating to ensure that HCM can increase its outreach and provide food and support to those in need.
