Frequently Asked Questions

  •  We know that some individuals have concerns about this so let us explain. We believe that all of our neighbors deserve equal access to the goods we need to thrive: things like clothes, appliances, books, blankets, and more. We also believe that everyone deserves the dignity of being able to shop for themselves and choose what they want out of the best that is available. When donations come to us, we sort through everything. Clothes with tears or stains get recycled; electronics that don’t work get scrapped; books with missing pages are not put on the shelves. We want to ensure that neighbors seeking assistance and our community shopping our shelves have access to the best we can offer!

  • Our basic philosophy around pricing is that our prices should allow us to continue funding the operation of the thrift store while being affordable to most if not all of our neighbors. For that reason we have clothing ranging in price from $0.25 an item to $10-15 for specialty items.

  • If someone is in need of clothing but cannot afford it, we can process a voucher for free clothes. We take referrals from other agencies in the county, and neighbors who need help can also go to our main office. After a conversation with one of our staff or volunteers, we can provide them a voucher. With this voucher, they can shop in the store like anyone else, and they simply pay with a coupon!

  • All proceeds from the thrift store go to support the ongoing work of HCM. You can learn more about those other programs here.
