Ingredients
1 - 1.5 pounds of ground beef (or any ground meat)
1 cup dry lentils (green or brown are best for this recipe)
Salt and Pepper to taste
Any seasonings you like in your burgers
Instructions
Rinse the lentils.
Combine the lentils with 2 cups of water in a pot and bring to a boil on the stove, cover and simmer on medium low for 35-40 minutes.
Once tender, drain any remaining water.
In a bowl, smash the lentils with the backside of a fork. The more you mash them, the less noticeable they will be in the burgers.
Mix your beef, lentils, salt, pepper, and any other seasonings you like. (normal options would be onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, etc).
Once well combined, divide the mixture into the number of hamburger patties you want. (use a 1/3 cup measuring cup and you will get 8-9 depending on how much beef you use.)
Flatten the burgers to about 1/2 inch thickness
Heat a griddle or skillet to medium high heat. Spray with cooking spray right before putting the burgers down. Add the burgers and sprinkle with a little extra salt.
Cook the burgers for 3 to 4 minutes per side. Goal internal temperature is 160 degrees for beef and 165 for chicken or turkey.
Serve on buns with your favorite burger toppings and a side of fries, chips, or salad!
These burgers can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days or frozen to preserve longer.
