WNC Floods of 2024

Current HCM Response

HCM is currently prioritizing food ACCESS. We are networking with various community agencies to ensure that food is available in the communities most affected by the floods and the isolation that comes from natural disasters. Current partners include:

  • Cruso Community Center

  • Pigeon Community Multicultural Development Center

  • Bethel Community Resource Organization

  • Fines Creek Community Association

  • Calvary Road Baptist Church

In addition to maintaining our own food distributions, we are working to resource these other distribution and feeding sites!

At the same time, we are working with our small local farms to assess the damage to their crops and farm infrastructure, and purchase goods from them that, due to the disaster, they are struggling to sell due to the collapse of local markets. This food is then distributed to those most affected by the flood!

HCM’s Future Plan

Once the initial Food Access phase is operational and we move into long-term recovery, we want to help our communities recover and rebuild with future RESILIENCY and SUSTAINABILITY in mind.

We want to ensure the longevity of our rural food ecosystem. We want to empower our rural communities with disaster-resilient communications infrastructure, and help our families and our farms rebuild in ways that help them prepare for future disasters.

ARISE = Access, Resiliency, Inclusivity, Sustainability, for Everyone!
