Wayne Towery: A HOP Story

Wayne Towery (age 53) is a resident of Haywood County who has a great fondness for old Western movies. In 2023, he developed a new medical condition that required the amputation of his left leg above the knee. As a result, he could no longer work for his landscaping business.

"My whole lifestyle changed. It was a big adjustment. Then, my doctor, who provides in-home services, recommended that I seek additional assistance. I had old stairs that were really dangerous and flimsy. That's when I discovered Haywood Christian Ministry."

There was a critical need for Wayne to have a safer and more accessible environment after his leg amputation. So, our NC HOP program installed a new, sturdy, secure ramp to replace the old, hazardous one. This ensured Wayne's physical safety by enabling easier mobility in and out of his home. HCM also gave Wayne 100 pounds of propane from the Heating Haywood program for the winter and continues to provide weekly grocery supplements, and produce vouchers. Wayne's main message is

Organizations like HCM are out there to help, you just have to keep looking, because of people like you and people who donate there is hope for those who are disabled. It can feel hopeless sometimes but there is always help in the community.

Wayne's journey reflects the resilience and strength of the human spirit. His experience emphasizes how life can unexpectedly change and how crucial it is to have a support system during such challenging times. Losing a limb and the inability to continue his previous work not only altered his physical abilities but also transformed his entire way of life.

The assistance Wayne received from HCM HOP was not just about providing support like a safer ramp, propane, and groceries. It was about restoring dignity, safety, and stability to his life. These services did not just address immediate needs; they provided a lifeline, preventing Wayne from having little to no access to essential resources. Communities thrive when individuals and organizations work together to help when in need. Resilience can be found when individuals facing adversity choose to reach out and seek assistance. This journey is a testament to the power of hope and the importance of a supportive community. It's a reminder that amidst challenges, there's always a possibility for a brighter future when kindness and support are extended.

People like Wayne Towery are a beacon of inspiration to us and the community in Haywood County. Wayne will likely continue to need support throughout this period of his life and it is undoubtedly up to us at HCM and the community to provide that lifeline for Wayne and other people who have fallen into similar situations. We will always work together with our partners and community to ensure that Wayne will receive the assistance needed.

We kindly encourage anyone who is able to donate or volunteer! Wayne is only one person amongst the thousands of people who require assistance.
