The Experiences of a Family in Haywood County

My name is María. At the beginning of 2024, thanks to the HOP program, we were able to repair the roof of our home. It was a great need, as we were living with moisture and leaks that put my children's health at risk. When we were approved for assistance, I felt an immense relief and a renewed sense of hope. I thought that, finally, we would have a safe place to call home.

But life sometimes puts us through very hard trials. Shortly after the repairs, Hurricane Helene came and completely destroyed our home. Everything we had cared for and fought to keep was lost in a matter of hours. We were left without a home, without a safe place to sleep. It was devastating.

Today, we live in a house without a bathroom. We have to rent a portable restroom, and we rely on a generator for electricity. It is very difficult to adapt to this situation after having had a stable home and feeling, even for a moment, that everything was going to be okay. I was also supposed to receive additional repairs, but I was informed that HOP is unable to complete the repairs at this time.

Mi nombre es María. A principios del 2024, gracias al programa HOP, pudimos reparar el techo de nuestra casa. Era una gran necesidad, ya que vivíamos entre humedad y goteras que ponían en riesgo la salud de mis hijos. Cuando nos aprobaron la ayuda, sentí un alivio inmenso y una esperanza renovada. Pensé que por fin tendríamos un lugar seguro al que llamar hogar.

Pero la vida a veces nos pone pruebas muy duras. Poco tiempo después de las reparaciones, el Huracán Helene llegó y destruyó por completo nuestro hogar. Todo lo que habíamos cuidado y luchado por mantener se perdió en cuestión de horas. Nos quedamos sin casa, sin un lugar seguro donde dormir. Fue devastador.

Hoy vivimos en una casa donde no tenemos baño. Tenemos que rentar un baño portátil y solo contamos con un generador para tener electricidad. Es muy difícil adaptarnos a esta situación después de haber tenido un hogar estable, después de haber sentido, aunque sea por un momento, que todo iba a estar bien. También se suponía que recibiríamos reparaciones adicionales, pero me informaron que HOP no puede realizarlas en este momento.

Mi mayor deseo es poder darle a mis hijos un espacio digno, un lugar seguro donde puedan crecer sin tantas carencias.
