Destiny’s story: HOP works

“My name is Destiny, and I am a resident of Haywood County. I’m a wife and mother of

four children, and right now, our family is going through very difficult times. I struggle

with serious health issues, especially with my respiratory system. I’ve undergone

surgery for these problems, but unfortunately, doctors still don’t understand why I

haven’t improved. I rely on daily medication not only for my breathing issues but for

other ongoing health concerns as well.

When I heard about the HOP (Healthy Opportunities Pilot) program, it felt like a

blessing. I was able to enroll, and immediately began receiving support that helped us

tremendously, things like food boxes and fruit and vegetable vouchers. These services

saved us money, which was a huge relief since my husband is the only one working to

support our family. I received these benefits for about two months, and they made a real

difference.

Then one day, I got a call from Haywood Christian Ministry to schedule a home

inspection for possible repairs. I was overjoyed. Our home is in bad shape, and we

simply can’t afford the high cost of repairs. I was hopeful that we might finally get help

with our bathroom, which has mold everywhere, or with our kitchen, where water leaks

have destroyed the walls. I even hoped the roof might be repaired. It gave me so much

hope not just for my home, but for my health.

But then I received another call, this time to tell me the HOP program had been paused

due to a lack of support from our North Carolina representatives. Just like that, all the

hope I had for a better, healthier living situation was gone.

I truly wish our state leaders would continue to support the HOP program. It gave me

hope, and it could help so many other families in our community who are also

struggling. I dream of having a healthier home, a stronger respiratory system, and a

better future for my family. Please, let this program continue not just for me, but for

every family like mine.”
