Jason's Story: Beyond Food Assistance
Jason, a 49-year-old resident of Waynesville, had been managing health issues without much assistance, after a few separate accidents. He reflected on how he faced death as his kidneys shut down and had renal failure, Jason has had 8 surgeries after he got in a bad car accident that left him with many broken vertebrae in his back. He had to rely on government assistance for disability due to his extensive and painful injuries. Jason emphasized that he experiences pain most days, which makes it difficult for him to perform necessary tasks.
Jason and his son take great pride in their home, but when Jason became unable to maintain his household physically, the assistance he didn’t know was available for him fell into his lap.
“I went to get a weekly food supplement from the pantry one day, and Bernedice and Theo offered me a way to get further life-changing assistance.”
Since traveling can cause great discomfort for Jason, and as he is on disability, he was offered food delivery through our NC HOP program.
“Theo started coming every Friday to deliver food. When he visited my house he noticed that the stairs and door were very dangerous and in disrepair, he told me about NC HOP and the available assistance that would build a new entryway and door to my home. Within weeks I had a new sturdy ramp and front door built that allowed me better access to my home.”
HCM recognizes the importance of having food and safe living spaces. People like Jason who have faced adversity should have an easily accessible way to get food and enter their homes.
“When you think you are at your rock bottom and you think there's no help going to arrive and you don't see a way out, just give it time, God will show a way, have faith.“
Jason recalls how he went to pick up his weekly food box but ended up getting much more assistance.
“It has helped me tremendously, I feel blessed. They are such nice people at HCM, and NC HOP is a really great program.”
